Background

Karl completed his Bachelor of Forest Science at the Technical University of Dresden (Germany) in June 2006. He took the opportunity to do part of his MSc studies in wood biology and technology with DPI&F in Brisbane as a technical assistant for the cocowood improvement project. Back in Germany, he is continuing his MSc studies at the University of Göttingen.

Role in the Cocowood Improvement project

Karl contributed to general project management, conducted a workshop for coconut wood primary processing, in Suva, Fiji, and sampled coconut wood on Savusavu and Taveuni, Fiji. He also spent considerable time in the lab, describing the basic, physical and mechanical properties of coconut wood as well as anatomical characteristics.

 Interests

Karl’s key interest is in the connection between coconut wood properties and their bearing on selecting coconut palms in relation to new processing approaches.

He is also interested in working with international cocowood-enthusiasts.
